Recent public architecture operations in Romania make me mad. For example, the project for the protection of the Roman ruins in the historic city of Alba Iulia is a revolting shack, with the roof shaped as an open book. It’s tenth rate architecture, but obviously living up to the expectations of the City Hall. This project stands out by its ridiculousness, but it actually expresses a process which is ongoing, despite the crisis: grand public operations made without a competition, without public consultation, without even a debate about the program or the relationship with the city; good intentions, I am sure, but a lot of missed opportunities.

The problem with Roșia Montana (the place in Transylvania, the controversial cyanide mining project and the fight against it) is not the focus of this article; instead, we will talk about the marches that have been held in Bucharest for the last three months. Apart from the subject itself, I believe these actions were seminal in terms of using and perceiving the city.

I was reading a funny story: “A game that began with paper planes has received financing worth half a million dollars”. The project in question is called Power Up 3.0, developed by Shai Goitein and the TobyRich company, and it was financed with great enthusiasm by means of the Kickstarter platform: a smartphone app that can control any paper plane from a distance with the help of a tiny electromechanical device.

We flirted with rock culture in our youth, considering it’s smart, sophisticated, and wild enough to satisfy our young egos full of crazy ideas. We started this adventure to design Fire Club in the best possible way, we allowed ourselves to drink more beers than usual during work hours, truly for professional reasons. Fire is an oldie but goldie, from back when Lipscani wasn’t the place full of cliché and excessive crowds it is now. Fire managed to create a devoted clientele. One which helped the club reach its 15th anniversary successfully. As I was saying, because of solely professional reasons we had to spend a lot of time in the bar drinking beer in order to get the feel of the … Fire. It’s not just a place for teenagers, not just for rebels, not just a goth bar and not heavy metal either. You will find emo kids alongside emo adults even… It’s the perfect solitary place among friends, and if you want to be left to your own device or to start new ideas, this is the place. Rock, burgers, beer, black T-shirts and posters.

 In believe that, at this moment, from a strictly historiographic point of view, both progressive ideology and cultural resistance may find a different kind of civic balance in what I would generally call the urbanity that reclaims the past of modernity, leaving behind the stereotypes of the antagonism which arised with the Modern Movement, based on the new (industrial) city versus the old (preindustrial) city.

Dan Perjovschi at Ruhr Triennale 2013

One of the main attractions of this years’ Ruhr Triennale was Dan Perjovschi’s www – wall window workshop. The artist held the workshop in the Bochum Jahrhunderthalle, a famous industrial building from the region, which now houses performative and visual art. Perjovschi’s intervention included works from his personal collection and contextual drawings, as well, about the building and the event itself.

We saw the homestead at a bend on the road which passes through the Râmeti village in the Western Carpathians. An incredible image : a house, a shed and a barn exactly as they used to be a hundred years ago and which now seem to exist only in ethnographic museums. Three elderly people, patching a thatch roof with a sheet of metal.

Among the first 5 in the world in the top of cities to experiment/live in, always as an example in architecture and design debates, to be found in scientific and academic references, or in the political practice, people keep on talking about the Danish model, Copenhagen and how happy its citizens are.

Participationism is a historiographical construct inspired by mid 1960s’ anthropology and social theories. About twenty years before theorizing, by 1945, Hassan Fathy was testing “participationism” within New Gourna project in Luxor, Egypt. The situation was unique: the Egyptian Department of Antiquities was relocating the local population from the endangered area containing ancient ruins, trying to reintegrate people into sustainable tourism circuit through craft activities that they could undertake.
