There was a time when architecture was not taught in schools. It was a sort of craft on the boundary between manufacturing and intellectuality that came to define what we consider cities to be today. Centuries of institutionalisation followed; today the profession is protected, but the boundaries are not nearly as firm as they might seem. A leap beyond the strict category of architects who make or talk about architecture and design allows us to talk even better about the profession and about what it (still) means today.
In 2018 (Zeppelin #150) we published a dossier with the same name. We could not resist and are looking once again at what remains of an architectural education when the architect’s main activity is something else, but also at what architecture looks like in the hands of those who have not studied it formally.
