Invisible infrastructure

Aerial assault of electrical and telecom cables can be clearly noticed by everyone in the cities. Yet, the chaotic state of the wire coils precariously hanging on poles could call away from another urban problem, at ground level, though: the electrical transformer and switching stations meant for digital communication networks. The humming tin boxes often appear as a sort of necessary evil at a visual level, particularly in historically sensitive areas. Designers, architects, engineers and administrators have not been worried too much about this problem until recently…

Jet-Ville Company in Hungary turns transformer stations invisible, confirming the idea that technology vanishes or even disappears little by little…Therefore, we are talking about underground electrical and telecom systems for smart cities, tightly and securely enclosed, yet easy to be installed or maintained. The urban landscape is released from those embarrassing and dangerous vicinities of technical annexes: energy transforming, public lighting, telecom, traffic control, metering, and telecom terminals.

The first Romanian underground station (a pilot project based on JFA 100B system) was carried out in Oradea, in front of the local Police station. The maintenance hatch and the cooling grates made of galvanized steel can only be seen on the ground; the system, whose components prove a much greater lifespan than for traditional solutions, does not require fans (so, it does not make noise, and there is little chance of failure) and provides excellent protection to people and the environment. Most likely, graffers and bill posters will be the only ones disappointed by this infrastructure “invisibility”.
