The interior design for an apartment in a newly built residential development in northern Bucharest started from the need to provide character and warmth to a somewhat generic space, as handed over by the real estate developer.
The client, a young and active person, wanted the interior to encompass more of a home’s welcoming characteristics; a relaxing atmosphere to counter-balance Bucharest’s hustle and bustle, and also a good place to entertain visiting friends.

We have suggested the redefinition of the apartment’s limits, as a continuous and sinuous perimeter. This new backdrop plays many functional roles and is showcased through the use of several types of lighting. More importantly, it visually connects the various living spaces and areas, and the curved shapes define zones with a different character, starting from the access lobby, going through the kitchen, dining, lounge, and ending in the bedroom.
A chest-of-drawers, an encased fireplace, storage, bookshelves, wardrobes – all housed in between the existing limits (walls) and the new ones (cladding), according to the character and needs of each particular area.
The material used was processed to express the generators of curved surfaces out of rigid plates, by creating rounded slices, suggesting the idea of draping textiles.
The assembly of sinuous surfaces, textiles and visually easy or transparent elements, is balanced through the use of ceramic in the table/floor lamps and of decorative bodies marking the commode area in the main space. The range of colours used works with neutral and natural tones to contribute to the desired atmosphere and also to allow the light to emphasize the volumes through subtle alternances in intensity and warmth.
