Chronicles of the future superheroes @ Kunsthalle Bega

In 2019, Kunsthalle Bega initiated the programme BEGA ARTPRIZE, the only curatorial prize in Romania which is awarded annualy, following consultations with a specialised jury, to a curator under the age of 40. The first laureate of the prize was Anca Verona Mihuleț, who over the last two years has been preparing a complex exhibition project dedicated to the cumulus of technologic and artistic mechanisms that validate our perception about the future – whether we talk about artificial intelligence, dangerous microorganisms, accidents, financial predictions, paranormal phenomena or forms of adapting and transforming the identity.

The exhibition Chronicles of the Future Superheroes departs from Ray Kurzweil’s latest book Danielle: Chronicles of a Superheroine, which follows the efforts of a young woman to solve the great problems of humanity with the help of knowledge and technology. Written from the perspective of a futurist, the book serves as a manual that helps us to position ourselves in the face of the things that will come and for which we must be prepared.

The 12 artists selected to start a conversation with Danielle depart from the common interest toward exploring the unknown or from the idea of game, aiming to extrapolate personal experiences in relation to the future. The positions presented in the exhibition are the result of hybrid practices, on the border between visuality, architecture, engineering, choreography and performance. On another level, the exhibition outlines a meta-collectivity situated outside the global dystopia, at a point where geographic regions and digital channels intersect, sometimes creating chaos, and in other circumstances, a stability as contagious as it is pressing.
