We create the Swedish mood with a delicious selection of short and long films, fiction, animation and documentaries that showcase pretty much everything we know about the Scandinavian cinema. That is: a special light, not to be found in any other place, with twilight and boreal sparks, flawless photography, an imaginary sometimes bizarre and otherwordly, activism, dramas with comed inserts, or unsettling comedies.
We start with a round of short films, to get us going: two hours of fictions, documentaries and animations, many of them awarded at international film festivals. You will not want to miss Animals I Killed Last Summer – no worries, it’s fiction; Benjamin’s Flowers – a hypnotic animation; Still Born – an animated documentary, delicate and touching or Bath House – where a band of mice try to rob a safe.
The evening carries on with Bikes vs. Cars, a documentary which shows that cities are dedicated to cars and hostile to bikes. From Sao Paulo to Los Angeles via Toronto and Copenhagen, Bikes vs. Cars does more than describe a clash between cyclists and drivers, it calls for action and shows the changes that might happen if cities would give up the car centered model.
The evening ends with dancing to the set of Fjordisko – duo consisting of Calin & Zabriskie – who are creatively experiencing Scandinavian rhythms. Influenced by a wide range of musical styles, Fjordisko know how to move a club of people to the rhythm changing from Mum, Flunk, Röyksopp, Fever Ray or Kasper Bjørke to Laid Back, Niki & The Dove, Casiokids and many who are always on the playlists of successful parties.
